Bioinorganic Chemistry

Bioinorganic Chemistry is the field of science that relates Biology and Inorganic Chemistry, with a focus on the function of inorganic substances in living systems, including transport, speciation and, eventually, the effects of these inorganic materials in living organisms. This field has important implications for many other sciences, from medicine to the environment.

History and Mission

Nuestra Sociedad de Química Bioinorgánica (siglas en inglés, BICS) fue creada en diciembre del 2014 en la Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI), en Lima, Perú. Este grupo se formó, con base a las discusiones realizadas en la primera reunión de estudiantes peruanos y extranjeros invitados de química inorgánica y química biológica (BIOMET), con énfasis en síntesis de metalofármacos com aplicaciones en la medicina y sus implicaciones en el medio ambiente. Siendo el primer presidente de este grupo el Prof. Dr. Breno P. Espósito (2014-2016) del Instituto de Química de la Universidad de São Paulo, que dirige el laboratorio de Química Bioinorgánica de Metalofármacos (LAQBAM). Le sucedió la Prof. Elizabeth C. Pastrana (2016 - 2017). Simultáneamente con la creación de BICS, se estableció el grupo BIOMET y la Sociedad de Química Peruana de Química Bioinorgánica (SPQB) (2014), con las mismas autoridades. El grupo BIOMET en nombre de la BICS se estableció para avanzar en la investigación, la educación y la divulgación en el campo de la Química Bioinorgánica, para promover la comprensión académica de este campo, con un alcance popular e inclusive industrial. Además de promover en conjunto, proyectos, investigaciones y publicaciones multidisciplinarias que relacionan plenamente este área. El Grupo BIOMET, realiza eventos científicos cada año sin costo y de libre participación indistinguible al área de investigación. El año 2017 BICS establece un laboratorio (piloto), a cargo de la Prof. Dra. Roxana Y. P. Alta, con la finalidad de desarrollar proyectos afines a esta disciplina. Este laboratorio tiene la finalidad de asesorar alumnos de pre-grado, postgrado, e investigadores relacionados la Química Bioinorgánica. Para ese objetivo contamos con un grupo de asesores de nivel internacional, en diferentes universidades (Universidad de Maryland (USA), King's London College (UK), Universidad de São Paulo (Brasil), y nacionales (UNI, UNMSM, UNFV, UPCH y UCSur).

Dibakar Goswami, BSc, MSc and PhD

Mumbai, India

Dr. Goswami received his BSc (2001) and MSc (2003)  from University Of Burdwan, India and subsequently his PhD from Homi Bhabha National Institute (2011). After a two-year postdoctoral stay at University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, he has been scientific officer at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in India - Mumbai.

Dr. Vitorino received a BSc degree in Chemistry from the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería of Lima –UNI (Perú) in 2008, he worked in two chemical Peruvian industries (2008 - 2011),after that period he received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the  University of Sao Paulo – SP – USP (Brazil) in 2015, with a partial completion of a graduate program at King's College of London (KCL) in 2015, UK. After a one-year postdoctoral stay at USP (Brazil) in 2016, he received a MSc degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of ABC, in 2018, Santo André - Brazil. Actually, he works as a researcher at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET), University of Maryland, Baltimore, USA (2018).

Dra. Ortega received a BSc degree in Biology from the Presbyterian Mackenzie University (Brazil) in 2010 and her MSc (2012) and PhD (2016) degree in Biology from the University of São Paulo (Brazil). She worked as associate professor at the Metropolitan University of Santos (2016 - 2017) in Brasil. Actually is postdoctoral fellow at the University of São Paulo and Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET), University of Maryland, USA (2018).

Bachelor's at Natural Sciences from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (2003), master's at Chemistry from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (2006) and master's of philosphy in Chemistry from The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (2009). Has experience in Chemistry, focusing on Organic Synthesis and bioinorganic chemistry. Regular Faculty member at G. C. University Faisalabad on study leave to complete PhD.

Roxana Yesenia Pastrana Alta, BSc and PhD

Lima, Perú

É Bacharel em Química (2008), pela Universidade Nacional de Ingenieria (UNI-Perú).Tem experiência, em síntese inorgânica e orgânica principalmente em complexos contendo ligação metal-metal múltipla, encapsu-lamento e liberação controlada de metalofármacos. Atualmente estudante de Doutorado na Universidade de São Paulo na área de Química Inorgânica, com ênfase em Química Bio-Inorgânica atuando principalmente em química Bio-Inorgânica medicinal, desenvolvimento peptídeos conjugados sintéticos MPP (Mitochondria Penetrating Peptides), terapia de quelação, metalofármacos de ferro, estudos de interações entre complexos metálicos e biomoléculas e avaliação de estabilidade e atividade redox ativo.

Elizabeth Carmen Pastrana Alta, BSc and MSc

Lima, Perú

Master in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (Brazil). She has experience in Inorganic Chemistry, with an emphasis in Bioinorganic Chemistry, mainly in chelation therapy, environment and the development of iron metal drugs; in addition, in the evaluation of stability and active redox. She worked as a professor of Inorganic Chemistry and General Chemistry at the National University of Engineering (Peru) and as an assistant professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of São Paulo. She possesses leadership skills with teamwork aimed at solving problems. Currently, she is a Ph.D. student in Chemistry and a junior researcher in the Research Group of Synthesis and Advanced Materials (GISMA) of the National University of Engineering, performing research in the area of ​​Nanomaterials, thin films heterojunction, for photocatalytic application, activity antimicrobial, and removal of arsenic and toxic metals.
